ROYAL RUMBLE REVIEW

Author:Angelica Festa

Going in to this particular event my expectations were not that high. I want to say that I am pleasantly surprised, there were some hidden gems however overall I would write this paper view as a two out of five.

Match 1: Roman Reigns versus Seth Rollins

My expectations going into this match were very very low. Since the debut of both Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns, Roman Reigns has always been a mediocre talent. So already the two are unevenly matched in charisma, skill, and technique. Overall the match was sloppy. But, some highlights to mention, it was a championship match it was for the universal championship. Now, Seth Rollins has the same allure as some of the best wrestlers who know how to wrestle and make their character integrate. He walked in with the old shield music and in the crowd with the old shield gear. He was clearly playing up very well might I add on his part as the heel in this match. The match started with basic waist locks of the Romans were very sloppy and Rall Rollins takes control early on. He manages to hit a few good moves like a sling blade, something from over the top rope, and a suicide dive. The issue I have is that Seth Rollins clearly had the control of the entire match so when Roman went in for his heel turn and for the “twist “it looked very rushed and not done well. In my opinion it stems from this control early on that Rawlins was able to establish because he establish it with not only perfect character but also technical skill there was not one move that Rawlins made that was sloppy. Whereas, everything Roman did was either sloppy or rushed. And during one of the moments when Rollins managed to gain control he did some pretty cool things like a shield bomb through the announce table. All of the all-time wrestling fans know just how cool it is to watch a movie go through the Spanish announce table it was very nostalgic. There are a couple of near falls for both Rollins and Roman, however, Romans near falls were not sellable. The match ends via disqualification for Roman not breaking a guillotine choke when Rawlins grabs the rope. Roman then starts beating Rollins with a chair until he is knocked out completely. Overall I would say this match was a two out of five.

Match 2: Women’s Rumble

My expectations for this match were medium. Like many, the most exciting thing about the rumble match is the surprise entries. I have to say the women had far more surprise entries then the men’s did and I was pleasantly surprised by the woman’s match. The mash started off with Sasha Banks eliminating Melina almost as soon as the bell rang. Number three was Tamina and Sasha banks attacks Tamina outside of the ring. Number four was Kelly Kelly and Banks eliminated Kelly Kelly almost immediately. Number five was Aaliyah, number six was Liv Morgan, and number seven was Queen Zelina and she eliminates Sasha. Number eight was Bianca Belair, number nine was Dana Brooke, and number ten was Michelle McCool. Michelle McCool was the one that I was the most looking forward to. She did not disappoint and eliminated Dana Brooke. Also in my opinion she was the MVP of the match as she is considered a veteran and she out timed all of the veterans including Lita. Number 11 was Sonya Deville and she stays out of the ring for a majority of her time in the match, playing up on her storyline as a WWE Official. Number 12 was Natalya and she eliminated Tamina. Number 13 was Cameron and she was eliminated by Sonya Deville to carry on her storyline with Naomi who entered at number 14 and eliminates Sonya. Number 15 was Carmella. 16 Rhea Ripley. Ripley eliminates Carmella and Zelina. Number 17 is Charlotte flair and eliminates Aaliyah and eliminated Naomi with help from Sonya Deville. Number 18 was a blast from the attitude era past with a surprise entrance by Ivory, who was then eliminated almost immediately by Rhea Ripley. Number 19 was Brie Bella. Number 20 was Mickie James. Mickie James eliminates Michelle McCool in some poetic justice. Number 21 was Alicia Fox. Number 22 Nikki A.S.H. Number 23 was Summer Rae. In my personal opinion this was a waste of an entry, she did absolutely nothing and looks too rusty and she was eliminated by Natalya. Number 24 was Nikki Bella and eliminated Alicia Fox. Number 25 was Sarah Logan who waseliminated by the Bellas. In the meantime, Liv Morgan was eliminated by Brie. Number 26 was none other than Lita and she eliminates Mickie James. In my humble opinion it would’ve been better if Trish Stratus had been a guest entry and eliminated Mickie James but beggars cannot be choosers so Lita it was. And in my opinion Lita was the most under utilized in this match. They set up an entire thing between her and Charlotte just for it to land terribly at the rumble. Number 27 was none other than Molly Holly in her Mighty Molly uniform and so she was eliminated by Nikki A.S.H. and number 28 was Ronda Rousey. She eliminates Nikki ASH. Nikki Bella was also eliminated by Brie during this time. Number 29 was Shozi. Ronda eliminates Brie. And finally our last entry was Shayna Bazler. Rousey eliminates Shozi while Bianca eliminates Natalya. Charlotte eliminates Lita and then eliminates Rhea Ripley. Flair then eliminates Shayna and Bianca, leaving her in the ring alone with Ronda. Ronda eliminates Flair and wins the women’s royal rumble. I will give this match a three out of five.

Match 3: Becky Lynch versus Doudrop

This match was a woman’s title match and I was hoping for the best but expecting the worst. Unfortunately I got the worst. This match started off with good potential but about midway through became lackluster. It starts with a lock up and with an even control maintains for a good portion of the fight you can tell that the two competitors are evenly matched and skill and technique. That is more than I can say for Lynch‘s husbands about but well we can’t win them all. There goes a back-and-forth between Becky and Doudrop. Both land some pretty great moves like when Lynch was on the top rope and Doudrop yanks her off. There are quite a few head butts. Lynch takes a lot of breaks on the outside of the ropes and yet the match is still pretty even with skill and technique. There are a few cool moves like when Becky puts her in a sleeper hold and she breaks free but yet runs into the turnbuckle. There’s a point where lynch does a drop kick off of the top rope however it was a one count. There were a couple of near falls until lynch gets a manhandle slam from the second rope and that is a three count for the win. Lynch retains are title. I givethis match a four out of five.

Match 4: Brock Lesner versus Bobby Lashley

This was a WWE championship match and it was the one that I was most looking forward to. So it pains me to say that a match that started off pretty damn great ended pretty badly. Both Brock and Bobby have evenly matched technique and skills. Both have an MMA background and that came out during this fight. What started with a lock up turned into a ballet of MMA moves with a lock up in which Lesnar closes guard and manages to get a Suplex. Bobby then gives Lesnar a Suplex and it throws Lesnar across the ring. Again these two are the most evenly matched and this match had great potential. There is another lock up in which Lesnar manages not one but two Suplex is in a row and after a blow for blow exchange, Lashley gets a spear and then another spear to Lesnar. This match was like watching a ballet between two fighters who know what they are doing. Lashley goes for a third spear outside of the ring but rams into the barricade and then manages to send Lesnar into the ring post. Lesnar takes control of the match and this next part was probably the most beautiful thing I’ve seen in years. Lesnar gets not one not two not three but five perfect German Suplex on Lashley. Lashley gets the hurt lock in and Lesnar reverses and counters with the F5. This is where the match went for showboating and ruined it. The ref gets knocked out and allows Reigns to interfere in the match by Speering Brock Lesnar. And here is where the match gets ruined even more. Paul Hamman gives Roman the championship belt and Roman hits Lesnar with the belts to allow Bobby to pin for three. Lashley wins the championship. This match was a good five out of five until Romans interference which brought it down to a two out of five. It had potential to be an epic match like CM punk versus John Cena at money in the bank and fell shorts all in the name of stupid storylines.

Match 5: Edge and Beth Phoenix versus Miz and Maryse

This match I believe was for pure entertainment and it was. Bess and Maurice start off the match with Maryse running away like a little bitch. After she tags the Miz, Edge gains control and it is a back and forth into the corners. Maryse grabs Edge’s hair and allows the Miz to gain control. During which time The Miz taunts Beth as he beats up Edge. Edge counters and gets a near fall at two. Miz then gets a neck breaker in with a near fall at two. Maryse slaps Edge and she and Beth run around the ring and a chase. Edge gets in a DDT and puts both him and The Miz down as Beth is eager for a tag. When she gets in she beats up Maryse and gets a near fall however the Miz interferes. With Beth angry at the Miz she beats his ass only to have Maryse attack from behind with the brick for another near fall at two twice in a row. Maryse gets control of the match and puts Beth in a choke, there is a back-and-forth and a double close line. Miz and Edge become legal and they have a back-and-forth close line with a near fall at two. Beth knocks Maryse down and they double-team The Miz with a flying elbow by Edge and another near fall it too. Now both Edge and Beth are in the ring and she Powerbombs The Miz. Beth and Maryse start fighting outside of the ring where Maryse knocks Beth out and she gets a Hurricanrana off of the top rope on Edge. The Miz lands a skull crushing finale with a near fall at two. Beth spears Maryse and then double Spears the Miz and Maryse again. There is a double Glamazon slam and a double pan for three by Beth and edge. I gave this match a four out of five because it was an entertaining match.

Match 6: the men’s rumble

This main event was very disappointing. AJ styles starts off the match with Nakamura. Number three is is Austin theory and number for is Robert Roode who gets spine busters out of the gate and is then eliminated by AJ styles. Number five is Ridge Holland and during that time AJ styles eliminates Nakamura. The number six entry is street prophet Montez Ford and number seven is Damien priest. Number eight is Sami Zayn and by this point the ring is pretty full. Number nine is Johnny Knoxville, who is eliminated by Sami and then Sami is eliminated by AJ styles. The number 10 entry is the other street prophet Angelo Dawkins. Number 11 is Omos and he illuminates both street prophets at once. Number 12 is Ricochet and number 13 is Chad Gable. During which time Omos eliminates Damien priest. Number 14 is Dominik Mysterio. Everyone decides to work together and they eliminate Omos. Number 15 is Happy Corbin and he eliminates Ricochet. Number 16 is Dolph Ziegler and Happy Corbin eliminates Dominik Mysterio. Styles eliminates Theory. Number 17 is shamus and just before he enters the ring AJ styles eliminates Ridge Holland. Number 18 is Rick Boogs and he eliminates Chad Gable. Number 19 is madcap Moss and he eliminates Styles. Number 20 is Riddle. Happy Corbin eliminates Boogs. Number 21 is Drew McIntyre, he eliminates both Madcap and Corbin. Number 22 is Kevin Owens and number 23 is Rey Mysterio. Number 24 is Kofi Kingston and is eliminated by Owens without more that a minute in the match. Number 25 is Otis. Number 26 is Big E. Number 27 is Bad Bunny and he eliminates Sheamus and Dolph Ziegler. Number 28 is “here comes the Money” Shane McMahon. Rey is eliminated by Otis. Shane eliminates Owens. Number 29 is hometown boy Randy Orton. He eliminates Big E and Otis. Finally, number 30 is a pissed off Brock Lesner and he eliminates everyone. The winner is Brock Lesner. This match was a two out of five
